UCU has sought to respond to challenges for collective bargaining in tertiary education through the programme ‘Transforming UCU’ aimed at building a union leadership with a deeper understanding of the economic, political and organisational environment within which UCU operates. Specifically, the UCU workplace leaders’ programme focuses on leadership and strategic engagement rather than skills development (available separately). It is designed to provide participants with the opportunity to engage in critical reflections; it involves external input into sections of the programme, and it includes two residential modules, project work, and the ability to access high-level advice and mentoring. Sessions are led by leading academics and practitioners. Sharing ideas and experiences is a key element of the programme.
