Turkey: Eğitim Sen continues its fight for trade union rights and freedom

In the aftermath of the referendum of 16 April 2017 in Turkey, Mesut FIRAT, Eğitim Sen General Secretary, said “Despite all threats and repressions, half of the Turkish citizens voted ‘No’ which shows that people’s aspiration to democracy, equality and freedom is growing in Turkey. The presidential system adopted as a result of the referendum, has no legitimacy for us. There is also no doubt that the AKP (Justice and Development Party) will increase the oppression on its opponents by using these results. Nevertheless, no matter what the official outcomes of the referendum are, we believe that we have won. In spite of the threats and the extent of the oppression we face, we are going to continue to fight for our labour rights, democracy and peace. The solidarity from EI/ETUCE member organisations gives Eğitim Sen stamina and prevents us from feeling alone. Activities  carried out by EI/ETUCE and member organisations can force the government to review its policies which will enable us to breathe”.

Eğitim Sen reported that the outcome of the referendum carried out under the state of emergency and the intense pressure of the government, was not determined by the “will of the people”. It was determined by unlawful attitudes and decisions of political power, state institutions, especially the Supreme Election Board (YSK). The April 16 referendum has been subversive and is legally debated. It is a referendum that is not accepted by the public conscience due to the scandalous decision taken by the Supreme Election Board.
