MEPs Debate about a new EU Strategy on Gender Equality

Published:

On Monday, 8 June 2015 the members of the European Parliament are to debate about the new EU strategy for equality between men and women. The current strategy has defined priorities for action between 2010 and 2015 in the European Union and their member states, such as equal economic independence, equal pay for equal work of equal value and equality in decision making positions. The strategy phases out at the end of 2015. Therefore there is the need for a new strategy.

Fields for action remain numerously; the gender equality index shows that gender discrimination in most of the European countries continues. On a scale from 0 (complete inequality) to 100 (full equality) Sweden has an index of 74,3 while Italy reaches an index of 40,9.

Different institutions and stakeholder in the European Union are struggling about the next strategy and its priorities. The debate in the European Parliament can be followed on the website of the European Parliament at 6 pm.
