The Federation of Secondary School Teachers of Greece, OLME, one of the ETUCE’s member organisations in Greece, held its 18th Congress from 30 June to 2 July 2017 in Athens. Representatives from ETUCE member organisations in Cyprus, France, Germany, Serbia, Spain and Turkey participated in a landmark event.

On that occasion, the international congress’ participants met with representatives from the Greek Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs and received an overview of the current situation in the shadow of the austerity policies imposed on the country by the Troika.

On behalf of ETUCE, Odile Cordelier, ETUCE Vice-president, stressed that the situation which the teaching profession in Greece is confronted with is unacceptable, resulting from a serious lack of education personnel and deteriorating working conditions.

Susan Flocken, European Director, conveys her congratulations to the newly elected leadership and emphasises the vital importance of education trade union unity and solidarity in that particular time when sister organisations in Greece are fighting for the teaching profession, decent working conditions and the image and attractiveness of the profession.
