Making women’s representation in decision making a reality

The Women's Committee of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) took place in Brussels on 30 and 31 October 2014. The discussion focused on achieving a gender balanced composition of the ETUC statutory bodies.  The members of the ETUC Women's Committee strongly welcomed the adoption of the ETUC Road Map on this issue, which seeks to make gender equality a reality and to ensure that the numbers of the ETUC Secretariat members of either gender are equal.

The Committee emphasised that women's representation is important for trade union's development, future and growth. The representatives also highlighted that women in leadership are crucial to the image of unions and that it is therefore essential to attract women to join trade unions. Further underlining this position, the chair of the ETUCE Standing Committee, Kounka Damianova, presented the ETUCE Practical Guidelines for Teacher Unions for the Further Implementation and Reinforcement of Teacher Union Actions on Gender Equality in Times of Austerity, which the ETUCE Committee had adopted in October 2014.
