Cyprus: Collective mobilisation outside the Presidential Palace

Published:

Today on 28 August 2018, OELMEK, POED and OLTEK, ETUCE member organisations in Cyprus, intend to express their principled position against the decision unilaterally taken by the Cypriot government once again.

In mid-July 2018, the Cypriot education trade unions went on strike to express their disapproval over the government’s proposals which are to come into effect on 1 September 2018 without consulting the education trade unions.

A big collective mobilisation which is to take place outside the Cypriot Presidential Palace intends to remind the government that only through engaging in constructive dialogue with education personnel’s representatives the provision of high quality public education can be sustained.

Wishing the education trade unions success and calling on the Cypriot government to start talks, Susan Flocken, ETUCE European Director, stressed once again, “It is education trade unions’ fundamental right to receive information and be consulted in due time. Education personnel and/or their representatives must be guaranteed the principle of consultation. It is in governments’  direct duties to listen to the views of people whom they serve”.
