UK Teachers’ Union Raises Alarm on Green Skills Shortage in VET
Published:
The UK’s University and College Union (UCU) has published a new report warning that poor investment in vocational education and training (VET) is undermining the UK’s ability to meet its climate targets.
The report highlights serious challenges in the VET sector, including teacher shortages, low salaries, and outdated infrastructure. UCU warns that without immediate action to support teachers and modernise VET institutions, the workforce will not be adequately prepared for the green transition.
It also calls for a national strategy on green skills and stronger involvement of teachers and their unions through social dialogue.
As ETUCE, we echo these concerns and continue to call for:
- Public investment in quality VET systems;
- Improved working conditions for teachers and trainers;
- Effective professional development focused on green skills.
