Local leadership as a bridge between teachers and the union in Spain

Insights from an interview with the Federació d’Ensenyament de CCOO de Catalunya (FECCOO) underline the central role of local leadership in keeping the union close to teachers. Local leaders are responsible for maintaining regular contact with members, sharing information, responding to questions, and ensuring that teachers’ concerns are heard within the union.

The interview highlights how FECCOO combines formal structures with proximity-based work in schools and education centres. Local leaders act as a continuous link between teachers, union bodies, and public authorities, helping the union remain present in teachers’ everyday professional lives.

The case study also emphasises the importance of training, mentoring, and advisory structures that allow local leaders to provide accurate and confident support. This approach aims to ensure that union action remains both democratic and rooted in the real issues teachers face in their workplaces.
