Representatives of trade unions from the Visegrád Four (V4) countries met in Prague hosted by ČMOS PŠ on May 20–21, 2026 to discuss the impact of rapid global changes on education and the role of unions in today’s education system.
The educational trade unions of V4 countries were represented by their presidents: František Dobšík, ČMOS PŠ (Czechia), Pavel Ondek, OZPŠaV (Slovakia), Sławomir Broniarz, ZNP (Poland), Tamás Totyik, PSZ (Hungary) who spoke in four panels about the role of trade unions, education and its strategic role and priorities for the society and specific challenges for V4 countries.
The meeting was also attended by Dorota Obidniak, ETUCE Vice-president, who spoke about the ETUCE activities and strategies concerning ongoing global changes and challenges of education.
ČMOS PŠ president František Dobšík said that:
„the world of work, working conditions, and education systems are currently undergoing transformation. We must come to terms with the rise of AI, digitalization, and changes in the teaching profession, as well as threats to its autonomy. All of this is further compounded by political turbulence, and we are witnessing a threat to the democratic principles of society as a whole. This makes the role of trade unions all the more important, as trade unions, as democratic organizations, contribute to the promotion of democratic values in society.“
Rapid developments—from the rise of artificial intelligence to climate change and shifts in the political landscape—are increasing uncertainty in society and placing new demands on education systems. Participants agreed that high-quality and accessible education is key not only for success in the labor market but also for strengthening democratic values and societal resilience. Emphasis should be placed on developing life skills, reducing inequalities, digitizing teaching, supporting lifelong learning, and strengthening the role of teachers.
The V4 countries are currently undergoing education reforms, yet they also face political and social pressures, including the rise of extremism and populism. In this context, education and trade unions emerge as important pillars of stability and social cohesion.
The meeting focused on how education systems can respond to current challenges and how trade unions can contribute to their development and to fostering a democratic environment. Discussions took place in thematic panels focused on specific areas.
The discussions during the meeting have also addressed the situation in the Hungarian education system and the role of trade unions within it. The discussions during the meeting have also addressed the situation in the Hungarian education system and the role of trade unions within it.
