Gender Equality: what have our member organisations being getting up to?


The two-year-long Get Up (Gender Equality Training to Overcome Unfair Discrimination Practices in the Education and Labour market) has recently come to a close, marked by its final conference A Gender Story which took place in Rome 5 December 2018. Given the relevance of this project’s objectives to the education trade union movement, ETUCE European Director, Susan Flocken, presented on the gender pay gap in the teaching profession during the final conference, enlightening participants on ETUCE’s gender-focused resolutions and action plans as well as on our current project Empowering education trade unions to address gender equality in the teaching profession through social dialogue.

Under the lead of UIL (Unione Italiana Lavoro), and in partnership with two ETUCE member organisations, namely the Lithuanian Education Trade Union and the Malta Union of Teachers, among others, the Get Up project team aimed to address the stereotyping of educational and career choices and to promote gender equality in education, training, career guidance and workplaces.

An awareness-raising campaign also formed part of this project, comprising initiatives such as the creation of videos on the gender pay gap , work-life balance and waste of talent, as well as the organisation of a photo contest and posters campaign with the contest’s most narrative pictures. This is an ongoing campaign which is being actively promoted on social media with the following hashtags: #worklifebalance, #genderpaygap, #wasteoftalent and #getupproject. Supporting the campaign, ETUCE invites its member organisations to participate with their activities.
