Latvia: Support LIZDA

Following the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers’ withholding of financial resources foreseen for education in the State Budget 2019, LIZDA is organising a picket on 20 March 2019 in Riga.

Among other things, the Latvian education trade union calls on the Latvian Government to comply with and to implement the following decisions and pieces of legislations:

The Education Law which stipulates that teachers' salary should not be lower than the salary indicated in the Schedule of Teachers’ Salary Raise for the period 2018-2020 approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia on 15 January 2018. The Law on “Teachers’ Salary Raise Schedule for the time period 1 September 2018 –  31 December 2022” approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia on 15 January 2018. The “Education Development Guidelines 2014 - 2020” indicating that education employees’ average (gross) salary should be equal to the average salary in the public sector of Latvia in 2020. The pre-election agreement on teachers’ salary raise that political parties, including leading coalition parties, signed with LIZDA.

In the run-up to the picket ETUCE encourages its member organisations to share their solidarity with the Latvian education trade union. “Decent salaries and decent working conditions are a sign of the value attached to a given profession in society. In Latvia salaries remain low. With a view to avoid severe teacher shortages in the near and long future, the government should give priority to strategies focused on recruitment and retention of teachers and the attractiveness of the profession, inter alia, by the means of substantial public investment in the sector”, stated Susan Flocken, ETUCE European Director.

ETUCE encourages its member organisations to send their solidarity letters to colleagues in LIZDA at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
